  • Details
A fantastic framed bulletin for a very early harness racing event in Bennington, Vermont. It dates to July 4, 1866. Features a lovely plaster cast wood frame. Purchased at an auction in rural Ontario. This piece is significant for many reasons.

July 4th is of course America's Independence Day, so this would have been the 88th celebration of the birth of the United States.

The date is also key as Jerome Park was opened about 80 days later -- on September 25, 1866. Described as the “national race course of America,” it was a thoroughbred horse racing facility located in a part of Westchester County, New York [now part of the Bronx] which operated until 1894.

The park was named after Leonard Jerome, a businessman and avid sportsman whose passion was thoroughbred horses. His daughter Jenny married Lord Randolph Churchill and gave birth to Winston Churchill, who would lead Great Britain as its prime minister through the darkest days of the Second World War.

Bennington is Vermont's first town, chartered in 1749 by the colonial Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, for whom the town was named. Bennington played a vital role in both the founding of the republic of Vermont and the Battle of Bennington in 1777.

From its humble back-roads beginnings to the standardized, multimillion-dollar business we know today, horse racing has been an integral part of the American history. In the early days, harness racing was an informal and fun event for neighbours to compete and earn bragging rights. They took place on country roads and village streets. By 1825, the races they were incorporated into county fairs all across the country. And by the mid 1800s racetracks were built to accommodate the horsemen and fans. By the mid-20th century, harness racing was the fastest-growing sport in America.

Very good vintage condition, with some wear to frame. A one-of-a-kind piece!
